Death Penalty
Pax Christi International views the growing public opposition to the death penalty as a sign of hope, even though such a penalty is seen as a kind of legitimate defence on the part of society. Modern society in fact, has the means of effectively suppressing crime by rendering criminals harmless without definitely denying them the chance to reform.
The growing aversion of public opinion towards the death penalty and the various provisions aimed at abolishing it or suspending its application constitute visible manifestations of a heightened moral awareness.
Highlights
• In a survey conducted by Pax Christi USA’s local groups a few years ago, the death penalty was an issue that the largest number of groups was working on.
• Pax Christi actively supports the work in areas where the death penalty still exists. Pax Christi regularly makes submissions calling for the end of the death penalty at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
