Peace Weeks are a unique model for advancing peace education in a local context. Many Pax Christi Member Organisations plan peace weeks in their local contexts often working closely with like-minded organisations and local groups. A peace week begins each year with the selection of a theme related to nonviolence, peace, and justice.
During the peace week itself, events are organised and related literature is distributed in public places to raise awareness about issues and inform civil society about what they can do to make a difference. These events have proven effective in attracting public support and media attention as well as affecting local and national political decision-making.
- Pax Christi Member Organisations have organised Peace Weeks in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Croatia, UK, Colombia, and in other countries worldwide, some of them started 40 years ago.
- Pax Christi has also facilitated the organising of Regional Peace Weeks for the African Great Lakes region, as well as new Peace Week initiatives in Kosovo, Russia, Croatia, Philippines, and Colombia.
- Pax Christi International is involved in the annual World Week for Peace in Israel & Palestine; in the Global Week of Action for an Arms Trade Treaty; and in the Global Week of Action against Cluster Bombs.
