What remains of the civic activism in Syria and Egypt?
Brigitte Herremans, Middle East expert of Broederlijk Delen and Pax Christi Flanders wrote an article entitled “What remains of the civic activism in Syria and Egypt?” With the peaceful civil protests in 2011, many hoped that the Arab world would change forever. More than two years later, many of those hopes vanished. The enduring legacy of the Egyptian revolution is sad and the ancient regime seems alive again. Meanwhile, in Syria, five million people are on the run. The peaceful protest of the early days got snowed under in a more radical and more militarised strike. Yet reformist groups remained active and revolutionary forces recently played an important role.
