South Africa works with South Sudan

A Catholic Church in South Sudan, a relatively new nation, recently sought the help of two Pax Christi International member organisations in South Africa, the Denis Hurley Peace Institute (DHPI) and the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference (SACBC).

DHPI ran workshops and assisted churches in making submissions to the Constitutional Review Commission in South Sudan. In light of this success, the churches have been asked by the government to suggest structures for a Healing and Reconciliation Commission for the people of South Sudan. The DHPI will also help facilitate the establishment of the South Sudan Bishops’ Secretariat in collaboration with the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Office, the Justice and Peace Department of SACBC, and the Catholic Institute of Education and Aids Office.
