Portugal: Obituary for Bishop Manuel Martins, the first president of the Portuguese section of Pax Christi
Pax Christi in Portugal recalled Bishop Manuel Martins, emeritus bishop of Setúbal who died this past Sunday, for announcing the "Gospel of justice, peace and love."
In a statement sent to ECCLESIA Agency, the leadership of the Catholic organisation stresses that the emeritus bishop was a "witness of courage, firmness and committed serenity, rooted in the certainty that the project of God for humanity passes through the construction of Peace with Justice and Fraternity ".
Manuel Martins, the first president of the Portuguese section of Pax Christi, accompanied "with enthusiasm and affection the creation and development" of this organisation "having been a great promoter" of "work and commitment to Peace".
"He always had a word of encouragement and attention that did not allow us to give up or to fade away, accompanying and participating in the work carried out, namely in the defence of Human Rights, in the fight for peace in East Timor, in education actions in favor of peace and justice, in the development of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue," reads the statement...
