In the context of the International Day of Human Rights, on December 11, 2016, the French Embassy awarded the Fifth Annual Human Rights Award "Javier Pérez de Cuellar" 2016 at the end of the "5K" race organized by the Ombudsman's Office in Lima, Peru to three organisations:
- First place was awarded to the Peruvian Forensic Anthropology Team (EPAF), in recognition of its contribution to the work of memory being built in Peru.
Since 2002, the EPAF has been involved in the search and identification of missing persons during the years of the internal armed conflict. This association has already managed to find information on 4,800 missing persons.
- The association Human Rights and Environment (DHUMA) from Puno, Peru, won second place for its work in defence of the rights of the Quechua and Aymara indigenous people of Puno affected by mining and water pollution.
DHUMA recently won a landmark case in defense of the right of indigenous people to be fully informed and consulted, and to decide whether to give their consent, before any mining claim can be approved in indigenous people’s territories. This sentence sets precedence for all indigenous communities in all of Peru.
