Peru: DHUMA helps organise press conference on the criminalisation of human rights defenders

 

12/9/18 - Pax Christi International's member organisation in Peru co-orgainsed a press conference this week regarding the criminalisation of human rights defenders. A number of organisations have supported the International Sign-on Letter: Stop the Criminalization of Social Protest and Corporate Impunity in Peru!, which was promoted by DHUMA from Puno and others. The letter received endorsements from over 130 national and international organisations from 5 continents, as well as from community authorities from southern Peru.

The sign-on letter was delivered to the Peruvian Supreme Court on 5 September 2018 and was broadcast live, accompanied by a vigil in front of the courts. The sign-on letter is also being sent to the government of Peru and to the Canadian mining company Bear Creek.

This week's press conference launched the sign-on letter in Puno and included spokespersons of the Aymara communities, DHUMA, The MUQUI SUR Network, The Democracy Center and The Institute for the Study of Andean Cultures (IDECA).
