The International Secretariat of Pax Christi joined a Call for Peace presented by several NGOs during the official opening session of the conference. The full text of this message is available below.

Re-enchanting the World with the Post-2015 Development Agenda

Call for Peace

NGOs partners of UNESCO,

Convinced that only a responsible and sustainable peace is capable of re-enchanting the World,

Deeply concerned about the serious threats to peace throughout the world causing innumerable civilian casualties,

Attached to the principles listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which state that “Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people”,

Recalling, with UNESCO, that "wars begin in the minds of men and women, it is in the minds of men and women that the defences of peace need to be built”,

Call every citizen of the World to create the social, economic and environmental conditions for a lasting peace wherever they live and work.

Assume with determination the singular mandate entrusted to NGOs in Article 18 of Resolution 53/144 of the UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY for a new world order based on tolerance and respect for people in their differences.

Urge Member States in this time of great peril, to fully assume through concrete measures, according to the provisions of international law, all obligations to respect, protect and fulfil human rights included in their laws.

Share the commitment of the international community and UN agencies to ensure, in all schools, from kindergarten to higher education for girls and boys, education for non violence, to respect towards everyone, an education for Peace.
