Pax Christi International sections meet for Annual General Meeting in Brussels
28/6/19 - Pax Christi International sections met in Brussels from 26-27 June 2019 for their Annual General Meeting (AGM). Representatives from 12 sections were in attendance as well as members from the International Board and International Secretariat.
The first day was coordinated around an exchange session where sections presented the highlights of their work from the past year and answered questions from their colleagues in other sections. The Secretary General of Pax Christi International, Greet Vanaerschot, presented a report outlining the work of the international network.
The meeting also included an election for new co-presidents following the end of the terms of Marie Dennis (USA) and Bishop Kevin Dowling (South Africa). The new co-presidents are Wamuyu Wachira (Kenya) and Bishop Marc Stenger (France) with a press release to be posted early next week. (An announcement regarding the election of new board members will be forthcoming once all of the candidates have been contacted.)
Other business included:
- The approval of Pax Christi Scotland as a new section
- Outlining of the programme for the 2020 World Assembly in Hiroshima, Japan
Wednesday evening, members of the AGM and other distinguished guests attended the ceremony honouring the 2019 Peace Prize laureates, European Lawyers in Lesvos. (Read more about highlights of the ceremony here.)
The second day of the AGM was devoted to strategic planning, guided by former PAX director, Freek Landmeter.
The AGM concluded with a special recognition dinner for outgoing co-presidents Dennis and Dowling. Treasurer Jan Peters delivered a moving dedication to their service as co-presidents, noting how they have transformed Pax Christi International's leadership model and greatly enhanced the network's standing throughout the world. Dennis and Dowling were presented with framed photographs of the two of them at the Peace Prize ceremony in Sarajevo in 2011.
