International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

On the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, 26 June, Pax Christi International joined an appeal by nine international and Mexican human rights organisations to express their concern regarding the implementation by the Mexican authorities of their obligations under the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

Torture and ill-treatment continue to be widely used in Mexico, particularly by law enforcement agencies and judicial police at state level and municipal police on arrest or during the first hours of custody. Impunity for torture remains the norm and raises serious concern that measures to combat torture have so far been insufficient to overcome many of the factors that make it a common phenomenon.
