Honduras: US representatives from January 2018 delegation hosting Honduran activists in the USA in May
29/4/18 - This is a follow-up to the religious leaders' delegation that Pax Christi International participated in to Honduras in January. Several of our member organisations, including the Sisters of Mercy and the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, are involved with this effort taking place in May.
Delegates from the January 2018 visit and friends are hosting Padre Melo and five human rights defenders from Honduras in their home cities in the USA of El Paso, San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, New Jersey, and Baltimore. We ask for your help by inviting your base of support to these events being held between May 11th-15th. The Honduran visiting each city will give an update of the situation in Honduras and seek ways to continue in solidarity. Please visit share-elsalvador.org for details of these events as they unfold.
Following these visits, individuals will convene in Washington, D.C. for a Day of Prayer for Peace in Honduras, visits to Congress and religious leaders, and a teach-in on May 17th and 18th. We want a big showing of support, so please come and invite your family and friends to be with us in D.C.
To ensure the safe return of Padre Melo and the other human rights defenders, we are forming a delegation to accompany them to San Pedro Sula on May 19th and return on May 24th. We invite you to consider joining the delegation. The last time a person from Radio Progreso/ERIC was on tour, his family received death threats, which we want to prevent from happening. An international presence ensures that activists are able to return safely. Our delegation provides a measure of safety for their families as well.
Our other need is your financial support to cover the expenses of the tour for Padre Melo and the five human rights defenders. You can make a tax deductible donation for SHARE’s Honduran program at share-elsalvador.org or send it to 2425 College Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704, with a notation that it is for Honduras. Another way to help is to buy airline tickets using your frequent flyer miles for people who might otherwise not be able to go.
