Honduras: Pax Christi International Co-president Marie Dennis participates in faith leaders pilgrimage to Honduras

from the People of Faith Root Causes Pilgrimage to Honduras

21/3/19 - [Ed. Note: Pax Christi International Co-president Marie Dennis is participating in this pilgrimage. ]

In the past months we have witnessed the courage and determination of Central American sisters and brothers traveling north in numbers searching for safety and peace. Now, more than ever, we must shine a light on the forces that compel individuals to leave their homes in desperate search for protection and survival.

This is not a time to militarize or close our borders. It is a time to open our eyes and come face to face with our own country’s complicity in the root causes of migration which have compelled thousands to leave their countries.

The faith leaders of Honduras are asking for our accompaniment.

This delegation is timed to mark the 39th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Oscar Romero in Honduras, and to take part in a theological forum to reflect on St. Romero’s message for today’s Honduran context.

Honduras has become a furnace of violence. A military coup in June 2009 opened the door to corruption, organized crime and drug cartels, made even worse by a presidential election in November 2017, which was widely considered fraudulent and unconstitutional (but supported by the US), and was followed by repression against those who protested. Human rights defenders and those organizing for justice have been assassinated, and many continue to receive death threats.

International solidarity is being requested in hopes to bring a measure of consciousness, human rights protection and support.

We have been invited and will be hosted by our partners, Jesuit Father Ismael Moreno (Padre Melo) of Radio Progress/ERIC, women religious communities and grassroots communities impacted by the repression, militarization, and impoverishment that is compelling thousands to leave. We will meet with organizations supporting those who have migrated and those being deported back.

Goals of our pilgrimage:

  • Listen and meet with grassroots and religious partners in Honduras to more deeply understand the regional root causes of migration and hear recommendations of solutions that would help to end forced migration and displacement.
  • Meet with relatives of missing migrants, those who have been deported from the US, parents of children not yet reunited, and those seeking to support them.  Deepen solidarity with faith communities and NGO’s in Central America working with migrant exodus, reunify families and provide “sanctuary in the south.”
  • Provide accompaniment and solidarity with Honduran communities who are fighting to address root causes and “stay home”
  • If you are a person of faith engaged with immigration, sanctuary, working with Hondurans and Central Americans, youth, women, indigenous or are interested in learning more about root causes, please follow our journey.
  • Our hope for the delegation is to deepen bonds of solidarity with the people of Honduras in a committed gesture of international accompaniment.

U.S. sponsoring organizations of the delegation: SHARE Foundation, Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas – Institute Justice Team, and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR).
