France: Pax Christi France issues statement on Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel
Pax Christi France is alarmed by the decision taken on Wednesday 6 December by the President of the United States, Mr. Donald Trump, to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel.
- This decision is dangerous for the peace process between Israel and Palestine because it is a catalyst of new conflicts and clashes between communities and people.
- This decision is dangerous for the whole world because it tramples on the principles of law which are the only alternative to the balance of power in the life of the world.
Pax Christi France welcomes the emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council of which France is one of the craftsmen and asks that during this meeting:
- UN Security Council Resolution 2334 of 23 December 2016 which "underlines that it will not recognise any change to the borders of 4 June 1967, including in respect of Jerusalem, other than those agreed by the parties through negotiations" be clearly reaffirmed. In consequence, the Security Council reaffirms the primacy of international law and that recognition of Jerusalem can only result from balanced negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis.
- Protect the special identity of Jerusalem, a sacred city for Jews, Christians and Muslims and its special vocation for peace.
Pax Christi calls for recognition by the UN, the European Union and France of the State of Palestine as a full member of the international community to enable a fair dialogue and in peace negotiations that are still to be hoped for.
