Europe: Pax Christi International signs onto statement calling on European member states to support the Council of Europe
from Alfonso Zardi, Pax Christi International representative to the Council of Europe
28/3/19 - Pax Christi International was a signatory to "A Statement on the Occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Creation of the Council of Europe", a declaration presented to the Council of Europe conference on the "Role and Position of NGOs in Europe" held in Warsaw at the invitation of the Polish government on 22 March 2019.
The statement was promoted by the Catholic NGOs' members of the Conference of INGOs of the Council of Europe as a contribution to the celebration of the 70° anniversary of the Council of Europe (1949-2019) but is supported also by non-Catholic movements (AEDE, KEK). It urges Member States to reconfirm their attachment to and support for the Council of Europe at a time when the laborious relationship with Russia risks provoking irreparable splits and cuts in the budget to the detriment of the Organisation and the Conference within it.
The participants in the conference, including many ambassadors representing their countries in the Committee of Ministers, took note of the document. It was neither discussed nor approved as such, of course, but it was commented on and, as far as we could see, it was rather positively welcomed.
