Belgium: Pax Christi Vlaanderen commemorates the Nakba with silence circles

25/5/19 - For the commemoration of the Nakba on 15 May 2019, Pax Christi Flanders, together with various other (local) organisations, organised silent circles to call attention to the ongoing Nakba, or 'catastrophe'. The Nakba commemoration was organised for the first time in Flanders last year and continued this year. New silence circles took place in Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, Genk, Leuven, Geraardsbergen, Ypres, Bruges, Tielt, Sint-Niklaas, Mechelen and Ostend. The local initiators again made a strong commitment this year to give the events of 1948 and subsequent years attention and awareness.
Just like last year, the names of the disappeared Palestinian villages were shown in the various cities. In addition, there was attention this year for Palestinian children in captivity. Photographs were shown and some statistics related to this issue. In different cities, the media highlighted the silent action and local actors were also present. Passers-by who were interested in seeing the circle were informed via flyers with background information. Some of them then also entered the circle to participate in silence for a while.
