Belgium: Pax Christi Flanders and Pax Christi International are sad to announce the passing away of Mr. Mark Heirman

7/3/18 - Mark Heirman passed away last Friday, 2 March. Mark was actively involved in the growth of Pax Christi Flanders from the very beginning in 1973. With his keen mind and fluent pen, he was editorial secretary of the magazine 'Courier' for many years. He wrote for Pax Christi Flanders dozens of timely comments and dossiers about international peace issues. He contributed to the development of various study groups of Pax Christi International and of ‘Nonviolent Alternatives’, an international service for nonviolent alternatives. In 1980 he became the first director of the International Peace Information Service, IPIS.

A quote from Mark that remains valid today, and the title of one of his first books and a bestseller, published by the D.A.P.-Reinaert Expenditure in 1978: "Weapons do not grow on trees". This book was dedicated in the UN disarmament year of 1978 to His Eminence Bernardus Cardinal Alfrink and Mr. Carel ter Maat, respectively former president and general secretary of Pax Christi International.

To this day, the numerous books that Mark wrote on topical subjects remain an indispensable tool in working towards a more just and peaceful world. We say with great pain in our hearts, thanks to Mark, his beloved wife Hermina Rumbaut, and his daughters Elke and Anneleen.

The funeral of Mark takes place on Saturday, 10 March 2018 at 10.45 am in the church Zilverenhoek, Zilverenhoekstraat 1B, 2950 Kapellen.

Condolences: Family Heirman, Jacobuslei 67, 2930 Brasschaat or marc.heirman@skynet.be
