PAX Debate: Killing without a heart
Interactive discussion including Jody Williams (Nobel Peace Prize winner) and Noel Sharkey (robotics expert from the BBC).
Technological developments are moving fast, especially military technology. With the ever increasing autonomy of weapons, there is a disturbing development in sight: so-called Killer Robots ie fully autonomous weapons. These are weapons that are able to select and attack targets without human control.
This development raises several questions. What are those killer robots exactly? Can these weapons comply with international humanitarian law?
This development raises the necessary ethical and moral questions, for instance about who is responsible if something goes wrong and how the threshold for war is reduced? How much will we let new technologies define our way of warfare?
