USA: Pax Christi USA and other U.S. Catholic leaders send letter on nuclear weapons to President Trump
In light of reports that President Trump, in a recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressed his belief that the New START Treaty was a bad deal for the United States, concerns about the Trump administration's policies regarding nuclear weapons are again at the forefront of foreign policy conversations taking place in the United States and across the globe.
In January, hundreds of U.S. Catholic leaders sent a letter to President Trump in support of policies which lead to the abolition of nuclear weapons. The letter cited the efforts of the Holy See to promote abolition and strongly stated opposition to efforts aimed at modernising the U.S. nuclear arsenal. The letter was signed by Sr. Patricia Chappell, SNDdeN, Executive Director of Pax Christi USA, and Cathy Woodson, National Council Chair of Pax Christi USA, among others.
In support of the Global Week of Action for a Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty, Pax Christi International encourages study of and action based on this letter in opposing any effort by the Trump administration to weaken or back out of the New START Treaty.
