Germany: Pax Christi Germany calls for arms control export law to stop the arms trade

3/2/18 - The following is excerpted from a media release from Pax Christi Germany from 25 January:

The new record level of exports is just as scandalous as the use of German weapons and ammunition in Yemen and Syria

Over the past four years, the grand coalition under the leadership of the CDU/CSU and SPD has licenced arms exports in so-called "enhanced third countries" outside of NATO and the EU again. The permit values for 2017 have totaled 3.8 billion euros, a record high. This corresponds to a share of more than 60 percent of the total sum of individual licences in the amount of 6.24 billion euros. This is an unsurpassed dramatic development because German military weapons are used in the wake of this arms export promotion policy of the grand coalition of the recipient countries in unrestrained wars. German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU/CSU) and Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, former Federal Minister of Economics, are responsible for the deployment of German military weapons in the Syrian war, Iraq war and Yemen war...

The new record figures for the arms exports of the grand coalition are a declaration of bankruptcy for the licensing practice of the federal government under the current law. Both the use of ammunition from German companies in the Yemen war and tanks from German production used in the Turkish attack on the Kurds in northern Syria cast a harsh light on the cruel consequences of the German arms trade. Everyone sees that German weapons are in use in places that have triggered large refugee movements in the MENA region - and still continue to worsen. This has nothing to do with security and stability. An arms export control law is the necessary way out of the ongoing breakdown of the political principles of arms exports, which already exclude arms deals in areas of tension and for people breaking the law...

German arms exports are fueling regional arms dynamics and fanning the flames of existing conflicts. ... No tanks deal with Turkey! All arms exports to Turkey must be stopped! ...

The demands of the Stop the Arms Trade campaign begin with Article 26.2 of the Basic Law: "The export of war weapons and military equipment is prohibited. Details are regulated by an arms export law." ...

Due to the massive devastating effects, the Stop the Arms Trade campaign calls for an immediate ban on the export of small arms and their ammunition, a ban on licensing (construction rights) and the consolidation of all regulations on the export of war weapons and other military equipment to an arms export control law, which also strengthens the parliamentary and civil society monitoring rights.
