Somalia Leaders Meet to Find a Way Forward (21/12/2009)

Members of the Pax Christi Greater Horn of Africa Network met recently with Somali leaders of civil society organisations outside of Nairobi.
Most of the participants, who met 14-17 December 2009, came from Greater Mogadishu and the South/Central region of the country.
Jane Maina of the Horn of Africa Regional Secretariat and Mark Barwick of the International Secretariat were also present for this meeting.
Somalia has had no central government since 1991. Inter-clan clashes and U.S. efforts to battle an Islamist insurgency have contributed to the failure of the Somali state and the prolongation of severe violent confrontations.
Pax Christi regional representatives met with the group to express solidarity with the people of Somalia and to open channels of communication for purposes of advocacy at an international level.
